Easy ways to stop your dog from begging for table scraps
As we discussed in our previous blog, feeding your pets table scraps can be good for their health, provided those table scraps are healthy, non-processed offerings. But while you may like the idea of sharing your meal with your pet, how do you stop him from begging for table scraps?
Here are some ideas.
Eliminate the table. If you"re worried about your dog begging for table scraps at the dinner table, the easiest way to avoid this is to not feed him at the table. Your pet can still enjoy the scraps of your meal but place those items in his dish instead of feeding them to him by hand. This will ensure your dog associates food with his dish and not with your table which will discourage his begging.
Feed him at the appropriate times. While it"s important to feed your pet at the proper location, it is equally important to feed him at the proper time. Instead of immediately giving your dog the leftovers, save them and add them to his bowl during his regularly scheduled feedings.
Provide an alternative location. One of the easiest ways to keep your pet from begging for table scraps is to provide him with another desirable location to spend his time. A warm dog bed is a great alternative your pet will enjoy. Send him to his bed during your meal time. You can also offer him treats as a way of reinforcing this behavior.
