"The Thinking Person's Pet Food"™ – Since 1979

A proper diet can help you maintain your pet's weight

Across the nation many Americans are struggling with obesity and while it may not grab the same headlines, many of their pets are as well. If you think your pet is overweight, or even underweight, a change in diet can be just the ticket to return your furry friend to a healthy balance. A proper diet can help your pet maintain its weight.

Before you change your pet's diet, you must first determine if he or she is overweight. Your pet's physical appearance will tell you all you need to know.

If your pet has short hair, the last two or three of your pet's ribs should be visible. On a long-haired pet, you should be able to feel these ribs. If you cannot see or feel these ribs, then your pet is overweight.

You can get a second opinion by looking at your pet from the side. If you cannot see the curve of your pet's rib cage and the tuck into his or her abdomen from the profile, then your pet is overweight.

While ribs are a great indicator about the potential obesity of your pet, the spine will tell you if your pet is underweight. If you can see your pet's spine – on a short-haired animal – or feel it without feeling a layer of fat on a long-haired animal, then your pet is underweight.

If you've done this test and your pet is overweight, the best solution is to move your pet to a raw food diet like Wysong's Archetype™. This diet offers your pet the quality nutrients his body needs to run efficiently. Partnering a raw food diet with some exercise and play should help your furry companion shed those extra pounds.

If your pet is underweight, supplementing his diet with human foods like yogurt or cottage cheese will help him pack on the desired weight.
