Dogs and chocolate don't mix: The 10 most dangerous foods for your dogs

Most pet owners know to never give their dogs chocolate, but chocolate isn't the only food that is considered hazardous for pets. Become aware of the 10 most dangerous foods for dogs so you can take extra precautions around the kitchen and help your dog live a long, healthy life.

1. Chocolate: This sweet candy contains theobromine, which is a chemical that can damage a canine's lungs, heart, kidneys and nervous system.

2. Grapes: Not all dogs are affected when eating grapes, but you should never take that chance. Eating grapes or raisins could result in kidney failure.

3. Avocado: Avocados may be healthy for humans, but they contain persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.

4. Alcohol and yeast dough: Both alcohol and bread dough contain ethanol, which can damage your dog's respiratory and central nervous systems.

5. Macadamia Nuts: These nuts can cause your dog to become very ill, even if just a handful is eaten.

6. Onions and Garlic: Whether they are eaten cooked or raw, onions and garlic can kill red blood cells and cause your dog to develop anemia.

7. Gum and candy: Any food that is sweetened with xylitol can cause your dog's blood sugar to drop, and will eventually lead to liver failure.

8. Cooked bones: Yes, even your cooked bones can pose a threat to dogs. Bones could splinter and cause stomach lacerations.

9. Dairy: Any dairy product, whether it is milk or cheese, could cause diarrhea.

10. Raw eggs: Uncooked eggs could carry salmonella, which is hazardous to dogs. They also contain avidin, which can create skin problems.

While you can't keep an eye on your dog at all times, you can place certain foods like chocolate higher up so your dog can't reach. If you think or know your dog has eaten one of these toxic foods, take him to the vet right away. The sooner your dog receives treatment, the better chance for recovery.
