Dogs and cold weather, tips for an enjoyable experience

The holiday season is fast approaching and with it, colder weather. You've probably already noticed the latter and you've pulled out your sweaters, your heavy socks and your best jacket. But what have you done for your dog? If you're looking for solutions this season, read on to learn some dogs and cold weather tips.

Many owners forget to do anything for their pets when winter comes or they rationalize that a dog's fur coat is all the climate control he needs. For some breeds this is simply not true. Dogs, like people, come from all different areas of the earth and their bodies are genetically engineered to reflect the original habitat of their breed. This means a Siberian Husky or an Old English Sheepdog is better suited for the cold than smaller, short-haired breeds.

Dogs not suited for cold weather will be more interested in coming inside as soon as possible. And if that means saving a bathroom break for warmer temperatures, the situation could become very uncomfortable for both owner and pet.

So how can you help your pet thrive in the cold and protect your rug at the same time? Follow these dogs and cold weather tips and you'll be off to a great start.

The easiest solution for your pet is to provide some protective clothing for your pet when he must go outside. You can shield your dog from the wind with a coat and add some footwear to keep his paws warm and out of the snow.

You can also help your pet by changing his routine in the winter. If you normally take long walks with your dog, cut those walks back to shorter distances during the colder months. This will ensure that the walk is still a pleasant experience for both of you.
