Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show wrap-up: Sky named Best in Show
The annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show recently finished its 138th competition, which took place this year on Feb. 10-11, 2014. The two-day event held at Madison Square Garden in New York City brought pooches from all over the United States to compete against each other for the title of "Best in Show" and the chance to eat a delicious steak meal at Sardi's. Although there were several strong competitors, there was only one dog who won the heart of Best in Show judge Betty Regina Leininger. Sky, a precious five-year-old wire fox terrier with a ginger-and-white coat captured both the audience and Leininger and beat out six other finalists for the top award.
Sky is the 14th of her breed to win the Best in Show prize at Westminster and won a trophy, ribbon and a hearty steak lunch. The runner-up, also known as "Reserve Best in Show," was a white standard Poodle named Ally.
Sky and Ally may have been the top two finalists, but the remaining five put on a good show as well. The remaining Best in Breed finalists who competed for the honor of being named "America's Dog" for the year included an elegant black Portuguese water dog named Matisse; an adorable Welsh corgi named Coco; Riley, a lovable Irish water spaniel; Classie, an energetic miniature pinscher; and one of the crowd favorites, Nathan, the heart-warming bloodhound.
