The claim is made that they have revolutionized pet food processing. They do not have their own manufacturing facility but use a private label company that produces products for many different brands.
  1. The claim is made that they only use “human grade” ingredients. Click here to learn about this claim. A picture is shown of fresh grocery store meats, dairy and the like. Please do the math and decide whether the picture could be what is in the food. Click here.
  2. They state that they have a special “LifeSource Bit” in their product. “LifeSource” is a trademark of Wysong Corporation and has been for almost 20 years. Their “LifeSource” is not a Wysong product nor does it have Wysong technology. We have kindly asked that they desist from the use of our name but so far (over 6 mos. as of April 05) they have ignored the request.
  3. They claim their “LifeSource Bits” are “cold formed” but some of the ingredients they use would be quite indigestible and perhaps even toxic in their raw state (flax seed, oatmeal) and one would need to inquire as to exactly how they cold process “chicken fat.” You must ask, “Do you really take fresh chickens as found in a grocery meat counter and somehow scrape out the raw fat and then somehow put it in the “LifeSource Bit"? Also, without heating the fat to a liquid how can antioxidants be mixed with it to prevent it from oxidizing and forming free-radicals—the very thing this “Bit” is supposed to prevent? Wysong has spent millions of dollars and many years developing non-thermal (cold) processing. Neither Blue Buffalo nor the private label company they use for manufacturing has that technology. It is one thing to claim this expensive and difficult technology, quite another to do it.
  4. Some of the ingredients in the “Bits” such as glucosamine and spirulina are not approved pet food ingredients and would therefore make the product not legal to sell. This is not to say these may not be beneficial ingredients, but only to throw into question whether the products have even been properly registered for sale to the public.
  5. As an inducement to purchase their products the claim is made that “whole chicken and free-range lamb” will prevent cancer. No such evidence can be found in the scientific literature. (If it could only be so simple!)
  6. The claim is made that rice is superior to other grains in preventing cancer because it has “less complex carbohydrates.” No such evidence exists in the scientific literature. (If it could only be so simple!)
  7. The claim is made that their products provide “unsurpassed nutrition” and cancer prevention yet the very criteria they suggest-- rice, chicken, lamb and fatty acids-- could induce cancer if they are heat processed (which their products are). Additionally, grains such as rice are not a natural food for pet carnivores and could also cause cancer if fed as “unsurpassed nutrition” as the company suggests. Click here

Dear Wysong:

I'm no pet expert, I have owned several cats in my life time, but barely spend more than the price of a can of friskies to feed them. I know, I know, I'm inhumane. Deal with it.

I know that my opinion on this matter will fall on deaf ears, but I still feel compelled to voice it.

You guys are insane.

Your company has claimed that certain items contained within Blue Buffalo products are not a natural food source of cats.

Well, in my experience, the only thing my cats have eaten when they go outside (is that still allowed, or is that now onsidered an unnatural place for cats?) is bugs, mice, small birds, and grass.

Do your cats hunt big game in Africa? Or are they like mine and eat mice, small birds, bugs, and grass?

Would you guys fully support a line of cat-food that exclusively canned mice, small birds, bugs and grass?

If so, I can start whipping them up right now. Where can I start sending my "completely natural; all natural" cat food?

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your letter.

The point of the Blue Buffalo article and of the rest of our website seems to have been lost.

We have detailed the logical principles and scientific evidence with regard to the healthiest nutrition.  From there, people can compromise as they choose.  Nobody is perfect, nor are we asking them to be.  That does not seem like "insanity" to us.

If you are upset for some reason because we have critiqued BB, we have only done so for its educational purposes.  If a company puts themselves forward as having expertise on nutrition, food processing, and health, then the facts should support that.

Your criticism seems to be more of a tirade than an interest in dialogue.  If you can cite specific errors we have made we would be happy to change, or give you the reasons for our position...so you can change.
