- MORE ON THE MYTH
- In the post-Depression, post
World War II era of the 40s and 50s, consumerism was having its hey day.
To boost our economy, it was almost considered a patriotic duty to buy all the
new-fangled gadgets being created.
- But consumers needed little
urging since they were spellbound by the technological feats which were being
accomplished. It indeed appeared as though civilization was entering into a brave
new world where machines would increasingly replace human labor, and leisure, fun and
happiness would prevail. We were headed toward Utopia, where all of our needs would
be met by science and humans would be transformed into large-brained, big-headed creatures
with small atrophied bodies and appendages.
- Really, this was the kind of
thinking that prevailed.
- For those who are not still
mired in this now naive thinking, the realization has come that technology is a two-edged
sword. In itself it cannot bring us happiness, peace,
security or health. The more we intervene in natural cycles and distort our natural
genetic context, the more we and the companion animals in our care will suffer the
consequences. A fish cannot survive out of water; we cannot survive without the
proper light, air, food, water and lifestyle.
- It is out of the
technological/consumerism era of the 40s and 50s that modern so-called 100%
complete and balanced, everything-you-need-in-a-bag pet foods were created.
Here was the easy answer to those looking for relief from having to create balanced
meals for pets. Simply tear open the bag or unzip the can and voilà
! Just like we were soon to put a man on the moon, you now would have everything you need,
100% complete and balanced to create perfect health for your pet... or so the
hopeful thinking went.
- But as I have explained
thoroughly in various writings, including this newsletter, evidence has proven that
so-called 100% complete and balanced diets are not that at all and in fact
have been the cause of a variety of diseases and responsible for thousands of deaths.
- The complete meal in a bag for
pets is no longer viable as a solution to nutrition, any more than the 40s and 50s
notion that we humans would be able to receive a complete meal in a chewable tablet or
K-ration. (It is in fact the singular eating of such K-rations by Korean and Vietnam
War soldiers that is now believed to be responsible for the high incidence of
atherosclerotic heart disease in these young adults, discovered when they were autopsied
after becoming war fatalities.)
- So, when I suggest to you that
you need to supplement to the diet a variety of fresh foods, as well as supplements such
as Wysong Biotics, Pet Inoculant and EFA, I am trying to help you restore the diet of your
pet to its more natural, health-giving character. Some object to the inconvenience
of having to purchase several different foods, and the need to think a little about meal
preparation for the pet. This is the price to be paid for health, just like it is
necessary for you to buy more than one grocery store item to properly feed your family.
- Granted, this may not seem as
scientific and modern as a perfect fabricated freeze-dried food in a can or bag, but its
the best of science. The choice is whether we wish to follow myths disguised as
truth, or truth as it really is.

- HERBS THAT HEAL
- Most people think today's
pharmaceuticals are a wonder of modern technology. They are, in fact, mostly
synthetic fractions of or analogs of plant chemicals. Aspirin, for example, comes
from willow bark, Valium from valerian, and Digitalis from foxglove.
- So why don't pharmaceutical
companies just use the plant material? Because natural substances are not
patentable. A company is not going to spend 50+ million dollars in FDA studies to
prove the effectiveness of a plant material when any Tom, Dick or Harry can then package
and sell it.
- This presents two problems.
One, effective plant products will not have the aegis of the FDA and thus,
regardless of effectiveness, they will not be used by the conventional medical community.
Those who do use them are labeled as quacks. Two, the synthetic purified
pharmaceutical versions are usually highly toxic.
- Taken as a whole plant, herbals
are usually quite safe since associated compounds exert balancing effects against
potential toxins. A fraction, on the other hand, is not balanced and although it
might exert a remarkable clinical effect, the body is thrown out of balance and side
effects often result.
- Below is a list of proven
herbal remedies for specific conditions. Herbal preparations are found in most
health food stores and further specifics on applications are available (Resource below).
- Animals in the wild have been
observed to select various plants to consume during ailments. It is by watching what
animals eat in the wild that primitive societies have developed complex pharmacopoeias
that return these populations to health during sickness and illness. The healing
resources within plant materials have only begun to be tapped in modern cultures, mainly
because they are unpatentable and unprofitable.
- A caveat: don't give any
substance, even a natural herb, over long periods of time. Use only briefly and
intermittently. Also, don't expect immediate results. Be patient and also
follow the Wysong Feeding-For-Health Program. You'll be surprised at the powerful
healing potential of herbs.
- For further information on
their healing powers, see the Nutritional Science section of the Wysong Book Store Catalog
(Resource below).
(Also watch for the new Wysong
Nutrient Support Formulas (NSF), which will incorporate these powerful safe herbal natural
healing treatments.)

- TOXIC WATER
- Municipal water supplies can
contain significant levels of carcinogenic chemicals including arsenic, radon and
trihalomethanes. These represent only the harmful
by-products of water purification and do not fully reflect the full spectrum of toxic
materials slowly leaching into our water supply. The EPAs standard for safe
arsenic levels was set more than 50 years ago, before it was known that this chemical can
cause cancer. Right now the average arsenic level for American homes is about 2
parts per billion which is considered safe by EPA standards. However, others now
believe it, as well as other contaminants in drinking water, put the health of humans and
their companion animals at significant risk. The best solution is to get the best
water purification system you can for the drinking water for you and your companion
animals. If you need help in this regard contact Resource below.4

- NATURAL TREATMENT FOR UREMIA
- Uremia is a metabolic toxicosis
that follows kidneys that are chronically failing. Unable to rid the body of toxic
metabolic waste, these compounds accumulate in the body, resulting in self-intoxication
and even eventual death. Uremia is characterized by loss of appetite, vomiting,
listlessness, and depression.
- Of course there is the need to
address the kidney disease and reverse it, but in the meantime attempting to flush the
body of uremic toxins is extremely important.
- Natural remedies are available.
Herbs that are high in tanins and polyphenols have been shown to be very effective
in reducing uremic toxins. Herbs that contain these compounds include rhubarb
extract, ephedra herb, and green tea. Although some of these herbs, if given over a
long period of time in high dosages can themselves be toxic, studies have shown that in
short term treatment they can be highly effective for uremia.

- FLAX SEEDS AND CANCER
- Flax seeds are a particularly
rich source of omega-3 fatty acids in the form of Alpha-linoleic acid (see Lipid Nutrition
- Understanding Fats and Oils in Health and Disease, available from Resource 3 on page 8).
They also contain an increasingly important group of diphenolic compounds called
lignins.
- Research has shown that the
lignins have the ability to inhibit cancer during its initiation and promotion, whereas
the omega-3 fatty acids are effective against cancer once it is already established.
This is another example of where the whole is greater than any of the parts or even
their sum. It is why Wysong Diets are designed using whole ingredients.
If all we used were the lignins, then existing tumors would not be affected,
whereas if we only used the omega-3 fatty acids there would be no inhibition of the
development of cancer.

- LAVENDER OIL FOR SLEEP
- If you are having trouble
sleeping, there are alternatives to side effect laden tranquilizers and other
pharmaceuticals. We will soon have an NSF (Nutrient Support Formula) completed
specifically to help induce restful, safe, relaxing sleep that allows you to wake
invigorated and energized for the day. But until this is done, let me recommend that
you try lavender oil. In one study of people who were taking pharmaceutical sleep
aids, it was found that they averaged 8.3 hours of sleep on the tranquilizers, 7.3 hours
without them, and 8.5 hours using the lavender oil . Lavender oil can be put in
vaporizers, warm water, on a cotton ball placed by the bed, or used with special diffusers
for vaporizing aromatic oils. Lavender oils are available from aromatherapy
suppliers, some health food stores or contact Resource below.

- NUTRIENTS FOR THE HEART
- Until I have finished
formulating our NSF Heart formulas which will incorporate a spectrum of proven beneficial
nutrients to prevent and even reverse heart disease, I want to alert you to two things you
must do right now. One is take 200-400 IUs of vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol), and 1
to 3 grams of vitamin C daily. The research is so impressive on the ability of these
nutrients to help the heart, as well as many other organs and tissues, that anybody
would be remiss in not using them. The upside is so profound and the down side is
essentially nonexistent. Both of these nutrients are important antioxidants, but
they also exert many other beneficial effects, such as vitamin Cs ability to
preserve the health of collagen which is an important part of the matrix of blood vessel
walls.

- REMOVING BRAS
- In a study of 37,000 women both
with and without breast cancer, it was found that those who wear a bra more than twelve
hours a day are 19 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women who wear bras
less. Additionally, women who wear their bras all the time had a 113-fold increase
in breast cancer incidence compared to those who wear theirs less than 12 hours per day.
- Bras may cause cancer as well
as other breast disease by constricting blood and lymphatic circulation. If
appropriate nutrients do not get to the breast and toxic metabolic end products cannot be
removed, the right climate is created for disease.

- HOW TO THROW AWAY YOUR GLASSES
- If you injure your leg and have
it put in a cast and use crutches, what happens? Does the leg get stronger or
weaker? Weaker. The muscles atrophy, the tendons and ligaments lose
flexibility and the bones decrease in density.
- Once you start using the leg
again, the strength returns. Physical therapists, in order to quicken this recovery,
will encourage a variety of exercises including weightbearing exercises.
- Now, if your eyes weaken and
you are not able to see at 20/20, what does everyone do? They get glasses - eye
crutches. The impression is that this corrects the problem.
But it doesnt. It weakens, makes the eyes dependent upon the crutch and
continues to weaken, requiring stronger and stronger glasses as life moves on and the eyes
get increasingly flabby and dependent.
- Why not take the opposite
approach when the eyes fail? Why not exercise them and rehabilitate them so they are
strengthened and renewed? A variety of self-help eye exercise programs are
available. I have covered some of the most effective exercises in the Wysong Health Letters. (see Resource below).
- Many people have been able to
recover failing eye sight and some even throw away their glasses altogether.
- It makes sense, so why not give
it a try?
