- DEAR FRIEND:
- Everyone would like to save
money. When it comes to feeding your companion animal, there are many price choices.
- For example, fifty pounds of
pet food can be found for less than $10 a bag. You've got to wonder though,
regardless of the label claims, what value could possibly be in there? The bag
itself can cost $1, it can cost $3-$4 to ship it from manufacturer to distributor to
retail outlet, the manufacturer has to get paid some profit, the distributor some profit,
the retailer some profit, and money has to be left over for advertising and marketing.
This doesn't leave much room for significant value in the bag.
- It is not wise to try to find
bargains in parachutes or fire extinguishers... nor is nutrition the right place for
bargain hunting. Do seek good value, but don't seek price without regard for value.
- Here are some things we have

- An important principle we all

- NUTRITIONAL BOGEYMEN
- Permit me to begin this by
repeating a very important nutritional principle: Anything can be toxic in sufficient quantity.
Or, put another way, the dose makes the poison. Even elements absolutely
essential to life, such as oxygen and water, can kill if given in high enough dosages.
- With this preliminary
understanding, one can then properly evaluate the continuing emergence of claims about how
this or that substance in this or that food or ingredient is toxic. The edge is
taken off claims that “soy is toxic,” “corn is toxic,” “alfalfa
is toxic,” and so forth.
- Now then, if you take apart all
of the ingredients that might be used in a pet food, you can find literally thousands of
different chemicals. If you take any one of these chemicals, isolate it and feed it
at high doses to almost any creature, toxicity is going to result. Remember, the
dose makes the poison.
- In the human nutritional arena,
there has been a debate raging about how natural toxins in natural foods - such as
carototoxin in carrots, steroids and estrogens in ginseng, carcinogenic hydrazines in
mushrooms, solanine and trichlothechene in potatoes and canavanine in alfalfa - are more
toxic than herbicides and pesticides. This argument is fueled by the need of
pesticide and herbicide manufacturers to justify and downplay the use of their biocides on
our food supply. But this is another topic I have addressed quite thoroughly in an
issue of the Wysong Health Letter (Vol. 8, No.
6).
- There has been recent alarm
created in the pet food industry by articles suggesting that saponins, a class of
chemicals found in a variety of plant ingredients such as soy, are dangerous to pets.
Sure they are... if isolated and given in sufficient dose or if a high level of soy
is fed continually. But remember, so too is any vitamin, mineral, amino acid or any
other component of a natural food likewise toxic - given in sufficient dose.
- Saponins, like lectins, phytic
acid and even fiber, are common in plant ingredients and can all exert harm if isolated
and given in extraordinarily high dosages. But as these ingredients exist within the
integrated complex of whole, natural foods at natural, low levels such as we use in Wysong
products, they can exert many beneficial effects. For example, various compounds
belonging to the class known as saponins such as triterpene oligoglycosides, elatosides,
escins, and senegasaponins are being studied because of their ability to treat cancer,
hypercholesterolemia, (In one review of 38 clinical studies over a period of 17 years
involving 730 volunteers, blood lipid profiles [cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL,
etc.] were improved.) diabetes, alcoholism and inflammatory conditions. Saponins
have the ability to actually slow the digestion of complex carbohydrates such as starch,
which tends to moderate blood sugar levels and decrease the absorption of alcohol.
Through this action it is believed that saponins may actually help prevent, as well
as treat, blood sugar abnormalities.
- Other concerns related to soy
include antinutritional factors such as enzyme inhibitors, hemaglutinins and phytates.
In sufficient dosage these compounds can interfere with digestion, promote
blood clotting and bind minerals. But again the key is dosage. Properly
processed soy (such as by Wysong HTST extrusion) eaten in variety with other nutritious
ingredients can yield health rather than disease.
- Another class of beneficial soy
compounds is isoflavones including genistein which has estrogenic (female hormone)
activity. These phytosestrogens can counteract the
carcinogenic effect of increasing doses of environmental estrogenic substances to which we
and our pets are exposed (see Wysong Health Letter
Vol. 8, No. 3). Soy phytoestrogens can inhibit cancer-causing estrogen receptors in
breast tissue, testosterone-sensitive prostate cancers, and suppress angiogenesis (blood
vessel formation) in tumors.
- So the debate will go on
endlessly, with one side arguing dangers, the other benefits. You need not get
involved or worry if you are following the whole Wysong Feeding-For-Health Program.

Perfect health is never certain, but you will be doing the best you can for your
companion animal. You should be varying the diet, cycling between the different
Wysong foods (some have soy, some don’t) and using a variety of fresh, whole foods as
well. It is this diet variety that also increases the safety of all foods and
changes arguments about the toxicity of any microchemical within any one ingredient into
non-issues.
- An argument never denies direct
experience. We have over 15 years and generations of animals fed Wysong which are
not only healthy, but remarkably so. Surely if the nutritional bogeymen were correct
we would have seen gigantic problems by now. Instead, we get countless unsolicited
testaments to the dramatic results of the Wysong Feeding-For-Health Program.

- IS YOUR PET DRINKING FLUORIDATED WATER?
- Before you assume that because
fluoride is added to municipal drinking supplies under the aegis of public health
officials it is safe, consider that fluoride is in fact a highly toxic poison. A
7-ounce tube of Crest fluoride toothpaste, even according to the manufacturer, contains
enough fluoride to kill a small child... or your pet.
- Fluoride toxicosis can include
symptoms ranging all the way from nausea and vomiting to cramps, tremors, weakness,
excitability, skin abnormalities, mouth and lip sores, sore joints and fluorisis (a white,
brown or black discoloration of the teeth).
- Fluoride can also interfere
with the body’s ability to metabolize collagen. Since collagen is a basic
substrate within all tissues including ligaments, cartilage, arteries and skin, wide
ranging disease can result.
- A variety of enzyme mechanisms
within the body including DNA (genetic) repair mechanism can be inhibited by levels of
fluoride as low as 1 part per million. But in people and animals drinking
fluoridated water, these levels can average 1.5 parts in the brain, 1.8 in the heart and 4
parts per million in the thyroid gland.
- Fluoride is an industrial waste
from the aluminum and fertilizer industry that has found a home in municipal water
supplies under the pretext that it prevents tooth decay and osteoporosis - both theses of
which have never been adequately proven. Although your pet is not in as much risk of
being intoxicated by this compound as you are, since fluoride can be found in toothpaste
and the millions of bottles of prepared juices and soft drinks consumed by people every
year, the risk is nevertheless there and you should think seriously about obtaining a home
water purification system or purchasing water that is known to be clean and pure.
Since you should already be doing this for yourself, offering the same good clean
water to your companion animal should be easy enough.

- ESSIAC FOR CANCER
- Since 1922, Essiac, an herbal
tea mixture, has been used with reportedly great success in cancer treatment in Canada.
Although it has not been “approved” by conventional medicine, some 55,000
people signed petitions in support of its use when Canadian medical bureaucrats tried to
prohibit its use.
- Although popularized in the
early 1920’s, the formula has been around for centuries. It consists of a
mixture of burdock root, slippery elm, sheep sorrel and Indian rhubarb. The formula
is believed to have been originally developed by the Ogibway Indians.
- Reportedly the mixture helps
relieve pain and, if taken before cancer surgery, helps prevent metastases (cancer spread)
and recurrence. Other uses include treatment for diabetes through its ability to
increase the synthesis of insulin, treatment of psoriasis and viral infections and a
variety of other conditions in humans.

- For
converting human dosages to animal dosages, a safe starting dose as a general rule of
thumb is to calculate the dosage based on the weight of your animal in proportion to a
human. (e.g. 4 capsules for a 160 lb. person equals 1 capsule for a 40 lb. dog)
However, since animals have higher metabolic rates than humans, higher dosages are
usually needed and should be given with slow, incremental increases, watching for adverse
reactions such as vomiting, loose stool and depression.

- MAKING BONE AND MEAT MEAL
- An alternate to using bone dust
from the butcher shop for home made recipes is whole raw chicken. Piecing the
chicken (including giblets) and putting it in a blender makes an excellent addition to
Wysong Diets.
- Add an appropriate amount of Oxherphol (Wysong
natural antioxidant) when blending, and then portion pack in baggies and freeze what is
not being immediately used. The raw, mineral-rich chicken bones are easily digested
and the cartilage provides elements useful in preventing and treating joint diseases such
as arthritis.

- LEAD IN HOT WATER
- Beware of water from the hot
water tap. Some people use this water to prepare instant coffee or hot drinks or use
it in general cooking and for pet meals. Hot water comes from a home reservoir of
heated water which comes in contact with a variety of metals used in the tank. In
some hot water heaters, lead in the solder and perhaps other potentially toxic minerals
can dissolve into the hot water and cause chronic heavy metal poisoning.
- A case in point is a
47-year-old woman who had suffered for 10 years from debility, weight loss, constipation
and difficulty with abstract reasoning. She had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue
syndrome until someone decided to check her blood lead level. It was
found to be almost 10 times the level considered to be safe.
- Drink and offer to your pet
only tap water from the cold side. Additionally, if there is any other question
about the purity of your water, install a quality home purification system or purchase
good quality bottled water for drinking.
