- DEAR FRIEND:
- To get the most out of life,
foresight is essential. If we expect to be healthy and leave a sustainable world for
our children, we cannot simply extract benefits without a vision of their possible
consequences.
- Realistic foresight is
necessary in social contacts, in achieving success vocationally, and in protecting our
assets. We cant simply use friends without eventually losing them, be handed a
good job without training for it, or have a financial nest-egg without sacrificing and
nurturing it. Everything good seems to come from planning, sacrifice and foresight.
Health is no exception.
- People continue to drink Coke
and eat Ding-Dongs, Cheetos, white bread, and Twinkies because they dont notice any
immediate consequences after they eat them. Clever manufacturers have the ability to
chemically compel the taste buds to keep people coming back for more. But taste and
satiety are not the keys to health or long life.
- Unfortunately we have become
seekers of ease, convenience and immediate gratification. Worse yet, we have
replaced judgement with reliance on so-called experts and their promises and claims.
- A case-in-point. Honey
magazine recently evaluated Americas cities to choose the twenty best. Several
criteria were used, but the one leading to their number one recommendation was
availability of modern medical care. So Rochester, Minnesota with its Mayo Clinic
was chosen as Americas best place to live. Incredible. Not that
Rochester may not be a nice city, but that we have reached such a state of surrender that
we would choose where to live based on assumed excellence of disease repair facilities.
We have come to see health not as something we personally achieve and work to
maintain, but rather as something we can buy from the Mayo clinic after living an
irresponsible life.
- Being removed ever-increasingly
from our natural context, we must now, more than ever before, use intellect and foresight
in making life and food choices.
- Studies have been cited (before
in the Review) showing that the coronary vessels of young men killed in the Korean and
Vietnam Wars were affected with atherosclerosis. It was present even in young
20-year-olds with no outward sign of the disease. Obviously the disease incubates in
bodies from early childhood, smoldering only to ignite in middle age to rob us of a full
life.
- A new test reported in the
Lancet now detects endothelial (blood vessel lining) damage even in children - long before
there are any outward manifestations of disease.
- The message in increasingly
clear. We are creating our own diseases. Mind has cleverly extracted us from
our natural genetic context in the name of profit and convenience. Our minds must be
used to make healthful choices now for ourselves and our children if we are to inherit the
health we were intended to have.
- A methodical, well-thought-out
plan for day-to-day living, with an eye on consequences, is a necessity in todays
confused and dangerous world.
-
- HEALING AND PREVENTIN PEPTIC ULCERS
- Ulcers of the stomach and
duodenum (upper small intestine) afflict some 10 to 15% of the U.S. population. They are
about four times more common in men than in women.
- Our digestive tract is normally
coated with protective mucus to shield it from the acids and enzymes used for digestion.
These strong digestive secretions dissolve the meats and vegetables we eat, and thus are
capable of digesting the meat of our own digestive tract if permitted to have direct
contact with it.
- Ulcers normally occur in the
pylorus, which is the end of the stomach, and the duodenal bulb, which is the beginning of
the small intestine. An ulcer is usually about ½ inch in diameter and can be diagnosed
clinically by x-ray examination, fiber optic examination, and the detection of blood in
the stool.
- Symptoms include pain in the
upper abdomen occurring about one hour alter meals or in the middle of the night. This
pain sometimes may be relieved by consuming food or antacids, or by vomiting.
Complications of ulcers include severe hemorrhage, perforation and obstruction, and are
considered medical emergencies often requiring immediate hospitalization.
- Not an acid problem
- Although the cause of an ulcer
is normally viewed as excess secretion of acid by the stomach, upon close examination this
view is not rational. For one thing, if the mucous lining of the digestive tract is there
and adequate, it should be able to act as a barrier to acid. For an-other, if the problem
were simply too much acid then why is there not a generalized attack on the
entire stomach and upper intestine, rather than on small isolated locations?
- The disease has been studied
world-wide in terms 6f its relationship to dietary patterns. Its incidence is highest once
natural, whole foods are altered by the introduction of modern processing which splits
foods into purified white flours, refined sugars, processed oils and fractionated salt ...
the four white poisons. No matter where the disease is studied, in Europe, India,
Africa..., those populations eating, for example, whole wheat, whole millet or whole corn,
did not experience the problem like those who switched their diets to the refined flours
derived from these products. Armies which have been forced to eat unrefined grain products
in the field also greatly reduced their incidence of ulcers compared to when their diet
was based on refined flours.
- Thus, again, we find the
recurring theme we preach in the Review: Take humans out of their natural genetic food
context, which is whole, fresh, natural, raw foods, and you can expect negative
consequences to result. No, we are not simply stricken by stomach ulcers, nor are we
random innocent victims of a disease. It is something we do to ourselves and
permit society to do to us. It is, therefore, something we can undo. We can be the masters
of our own ulcer destinies.
- Understanding that our stomach
trusts us to deliver to it foods which it recognizes and which were meant for it to
digest, and that we have been a traitorous servant to our body, provides the key to the
solution to not only peptic ulcers, but to disease in general.
- The modern approach of viewing
ulcers as simply an excess acid problem to be corrected, is overly simplistic and fraught
with spin-off health complications once we jump on the antacid band wagon.
- Acid is more like an innocent
victim of our short-sighted accusations. It is like blaming chain saws for deforestation.
Acid is a necessary and important part of our digestive process. If the protective mucous
lining of the digestive tract is not serving as an effective barrier to it, then something
is causing this imbalance. it is that something which must be discovered and remedied.
- It is interesting, with all of
our modern medical technology and knowledge, that we have not advanced beyond a
superficial impression of what needs to be done. That is, if we feel a burning in our
stomach, then we assume that acid is causing it and therefore acid must be neutralized or
removed. This is something anyone on the street can conclude, and yet modern medicine
simply endorses and promotes the same approach without finding or addressing actual
causes.
- Acid benefits
- Before you get too excited
about getting rid of your acid, consider its benefits If it werent for stomach acid,
we would be less capable of absorbing essential amino acids, as well as essential vitamins
like B12 and folic acid, and over a dozen minerals including extremely
important ones such as iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. It is estimated that individuals
over the age of 50 only have about 50% of the hydrochloric acid they did at age 25. This
loss in stomach acid may predispose to osteoporosis due to the inability to absorb
minerals such as calcium.
- The acid in the stomach is also
antiseptic. It is the first line of defense against invading microorganisms. Cholera, for
example, will only strike those individuals with low stomach acid (hydrochloric acid).
Campylobacter pylon has been shown to be associated with peptic ulcers but can only
survive in a low acid stomach environment. Thus the hypothesis can be advanced that it is
low, not high, stomach acid which permits the invasion of this pathogen into the
intestinal wall - weakening it and thus permitting further erosion by stomach acid.
- Low stomach acid is also
associated with increased auto-immunities including rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis,
forms of alopecia (hair loss), and vitiligo (failure of the skin to form pigment).
Allergies increase in individuals with low stomach acid because foods are not broken down,
and thus can be absorbed in their more complex intact antigenic form and result in
allergic responses.
- Low stomach acid is also
related to an increase in precancerous cells in the breast and mucosal (intestinal tract
lining) tumors. A low pH (high acid) is also necessary to convert
the zymogen pepsinogen to pepsin, which is an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of
protein.
- Studies have shown that some
ulcers are associated with hypersecretion of acid, but other studies have shown that
ulcers can develop in individuals with normal or even lower than normal acid production.
It is impossible to really know whether a higher than normal production of acid may be
simply the result of some underlying preexisting imbalance.
- The stomach has approximately
one billion parietal cells which are specifically designed to produce acid. These along
with chief cells, mucus cells, endocrine and somatostatin cells make up a complex
population of secreting tissues that all interrelate in one way or another to create, if
in balance, a healthy digestive system. To simply attack the parietal cells, for example,
with histamine H2 receptor antagonists such as Cimetidine and Ranitidine, is
kind of like using a hammer to fix a circuitry board in a computer. Everything is
interrelated. To address singular effects of disease is not to create a solution.
- Drug dangers
- Before taking any of the wonder
antacid drugs, read the insert description carefully and pay special attention to the
contraindications. Even some of the commonly used simple stomach acid neutralizers contain
toxic potential because of their aluminum content. (See Wysong Review Vol. 7 No. 1)
Tagamet, a common ulcer medication, can be lethal if you are exposed to certain pesticides
while taking the drug. Remember that acid in your stomach is necessary and the lack of
acid or the neutralization of that acid may ultimately create more harm than good.
- This is not to say in a crisis
situation where an ulcer has denuded tissue and no mucus is there to protect it, that
short-term antacids may not be necessary during the crisis-stage of healing.
- Preventing and healing ulcers
is both simple and difficult. It is simple in that it only requires living life as we were
designed to live it. It is difficult because it requires life-style changes, not just
visits to the doctor and hands full of pills.
- A Rational Prevention and Healing Approach
- 1. Foods you are allergic to
should be eliminated from the diet. (See Wysong Review Vol. 6 No. 12) The allergic
inflammatory response of the digestive tract may initiate fruitful conditions for ulcer
development.
- 2. Be aware that aspirin,
ibuprofen, corticosteroids, and perhaps other medications, as well as alcohol and coffee,
may contribute to the formation and severity of ulcers.
- 3. Emphasize whole, natural
foods. The increased fiber slows gastric (stomach) emptying and thus permits acid to be
more easily neutralized as it enters the small intestine. It is interesting that it is the
essential fatty acids, as found in the bran of grains, that is particularly of value in
peptic ulcers. This is the reason that in cultures where the bran has been removed (white
-flour) the incidence of ulcer disease is higher.
- 4. One liter per day of fresh,
raw cabbage juice has been reported to help heal ulcers. Drink fresh juiced cabbage and/or
increase the consumption of vegetables in the cabbage family which include bok choy, green
cabbage, red cabbage, savoy cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, radishes and
turnips. (Resource A below) This benefit is believed to be a result of the high glutamine
content of cabbage family plants.
- 5. Glutamine is incorporated in
mucoproteins, the mucous protective lining of the digestive tract. When patients are
placed on total parenteral nutrition -(TPN), receiving nutrition only by W, mucosal
structure is diminished and permeability of the gut to toxins and pathogens
(disease-causing microbes) increases. When the amino acid glutamine is added to the
formula, the adverse changes are prevented. A supplement of the amino acid glutamine at a
rate of 500 mg three times a day may also prove beneficial in restoring the protective
mucous lining. (Resource B below)
- 6. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice
has been proven to be highly effective in healing ulcers by stimulating the production of
the mucous lining. Licorice is in fact one of the first substances studied and shown to be
effective in healing peptic ulcers. It has no side effects in its deglycyrrhizinated form.
In controlled studies comparing its effectiveness against the acid suppressors Cimetidine
and Ranitidine, it was found to be just as effective but with no untoward effects. It has
also been shown that individuals using the deglycyrrhizinated licorice have fewer relapses
than those using Cimetidine. The dosage is 250 mg three times a day. It is chewed 20
minutes before meals. This dosage can be reduced or increased depending upon the severity
of the condition and is usually continued for a period of approximately 16 weeks. For
treatment of severe ulceration the dosage is given four times a day and for maintenance it
is given twice a day. (Resource C below)
- 7. Catechin is an herb which
has antihistaminic effects. Histamine, which is released in allergic reactions associated
with ulcers, stimulates the production of excess acid. It is by this rationale that
catechin is helpful in ulcers. The dosage is 250 mg three times per day. (Resource D
below)
- 8. Aloe Vera juice, taken ¼ to
1/3 cup twice daily has a healing effect on the gastric mucosa. (Resource E below)
- 9. The dried extract of
plantain bananas also has anti-ulcerogenic activity. This effect is believed to be due to
the stimulation of mucosal cell growth, thus increasing the protective mucous barrier. The
dosage is 12 teaspoon of the powder to be taken after meals. (Resource F below)
- 10. Take a probiotic
supplement. Probiotic organisms will help inoculate the digestive tract with friendly
micro-organisms that compete against pathogens, synthesize vitamins, and help the
digestive process and overall health in many ways. (See Wysong Review Vol. 6 No. 5 and
Resource G below)
- 11. Garlic oil, the smelly
stuff (not powder), in capsule form taken with a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt mixed with
probiotics can give dramatic relief for gastric pain and distress alter a meal. Try this
instead of antacids for those middle of the night episodes. Though youll smell like
a garlic clove, the relief is worth it. (Resource H below)
- 12. Do not eat unless hungry
and eat only until hunger disappears, not until you are full. It may very well be that
eating by schedule rather than hunger, and eating in excess, exhausts the capabilities and
balances of our digestive system. As a population we eat far more than we need. We also
eat far more frequently than is necessary, often before our system is ready to receive
food. The cephalic (neural) stage of digestion is very important. Hunger and the
anticipation of food stimulates the activity of digestive organs, mucus-secreting cells
and acid before food is even eaten. Also, fasting is recommended once in awhile. By eating
only one meal a day or no meals some days, this gives the digestive system a chance to
recuperate, heal and build its resources.
- 13. Chew food thoroughly. A
good policy is to drink your foods and chew your liquids. By mixing the food bolus with
saliva the mucin in the saliva helps protect the stomach, and the epidermal growth factor
found within saliva stimulates healing of digestive tract cells.
- 14.
Poor nutrition decreases our
ability to heal and throws our body out of appropriate balances, thus increasing the
opportunity for disease. Supplementation with a broad spectrum vitamin-mineral preparation
is advisable. (Resource I below) Some recommend that at least 20,000 IUs of vitamin A
should be taken three times a day, 500 mg of vitamin C three times a day, 100 IUs of
vitamin E three times a day and 20 mg of zinc per day to help heal peptic ulcers.
(Resource J below) These taken as extra supplements to a broad spectrum moderate dosage
vitamin-mineral supplement would be the best nutritional approach. (Resource I below)
- 15.
Eat fresh, raw foods as much
as possible. The protective ability, for example, of the essential fatty acids found in
the oils of whole grains is lost upon storage. Not only is this protective factor lost,
but the oxidation of these oils can render them toxic and thus retard any ulcer healing
process as well as set the stage for new disease.
- 16. Arachidonic acid, an omega
6 fatty acid which predominates in meats, as well as other omega 6 fatty acids that are
common in Western diets based on corn and wheat, should be decreased. These fatty acids
can inhibit the prostaglandins (cellular regulatory biochemicals) which decrease stomach
acid. A diet high in meats and high omega-6 grains in effect then increases acid
production. Instead, foods that are higher in the omega-3 fatty acids -including cold
water fish, wild meats, vegetables, flax seeds, rape seeds, hemp and whole soy beans -
should be used increasingly in the diet. Omega-3 oils which have been cold processed and
carefully protected from light and oxygen can also be supplemented to the diet. (Resource
K below)
- 17. Exercise regularly. Aerobic
combined with strength (resistance) training relieves stress and stimulates circulation
and metabolism to speed healing. (Resource L - page 8)
- 18. Get control of your life.
Dont bea victim. Review the Empowerment tape. Stress, which is primarily
a result of permitting ourself to remain in circumstances where we are a powerless victim,
can cause the excess secretion of stomach acid. Particularly
susceptible are those individuals who put themselves into such situations but are unable
to express their discontent, thus holding these emotions inwardly. (Resource M below)
- The steps mentioned above can
all be done together. In fact, the mucus-stimulating, deglycyrrhizinated licorice, banana
and glutamine can be consumed along with acid-blocking drugs. The goal of course is to be
able to withdraw from the drugs and manage the disease with natural, safe substances and
ultimately with proper diet and lifestyle changes.
- A bonus to this approach is
that not only will ulcers heal, but you will be creating a new healthier you, capable of
defeating other degenerative diseases as well.

- VITAMIN B3 (NIACIN) TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL
- Last month I talked about the
increased risk of violent death associated with cholesterol-lowering drugs.
- Pharmaceutical drugs that are
now being used to lower cholesterol levels can cost two to three hundred or more dollars
per month. It is estimated that in the elderly the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs costs
approximately $36,000 to $1,000,000 per life which actually might be saved by these drugs.
- Drugs used to decrease
cholesterol attempt to manipulate the body by interfering with natural cycles. It is
predictable that such interference with natural cycles is, in many cases, accompanied by
significant-con-sequences. Examples of these dangers are increased death rates from
homicide and suicide from cholestyramine; increased cataracts and arterial damage from
mer-29; increased cataracts, liver damage, and cancer from lovastatin and cholestyramine;
and increased HDL levels but no decrease in death rates from gemfibrizol.
- Some of these drugs tend to
interfere with enzymes that control the synthesis of cholesterol, others bind bile acids
so cholesterol from the bile is not reabsorbed, and others attempt to bind cholesterol
within the food. All are of questionable safety and users should be fully aware of these
dangers. Again, let me strongly suggest that before you take any pharmaceutical
preparation, you read very carefully the drug insert that comes with the
medication. If it did not come with the medication, ask for a copy from your physician or
pharmacist. Look on the insert for sections that talk about dangers and contraindications.
If everyone scrutinized the drugs they took by reading these revealing little papers,
fewer drugs would be taken and more lives would be spared.
- An alternative to
cholesterol-lowering drugs is the dietary and life-style modifications described on a
continuing basis throughout the Review and in your special Empowerment tape.
(Resource M below) Increased whole grain products and vegetables and fresh fruits will
naturally decrease cholesterol. But also remember that it is not cholesterol per se that
is the danger but rather its oxidized form. Thus foods should be eaten fresh and raw as
much as possible and cooking must be done with a special awareness of the fragility and
danger of oxidizing cholesterol. (See Wysong Review Vol. 2 No. 1, Vol. 2 No. 7, Vol. 3 No.
10)
- An alternate therapy for high
cholesterol is niacin, vitamin B3. Vitamin B8 is by and large
stripped out of most of-our natural foods as they are processed -and milled. It is
supplied to the body from natural foods, but also can be produced from intestinal
micro-organisms (if you have the right ones), and by a conversion from tryptophan, an
amino acid.
- Treatment with up to three to
four grams of niacin a day has been reported in the scientific literature to beneficially
lower cholesterol resulting in decreased cardiovascular mortality. Dosage ranges from 100
mg to 4000 mg per day. 1000-2000 mg per day seems most frequently used in clinical studies
reporting benefits. Always start at lower dosages to determine tolerance and sensitivity.
This vitamin can cause a flush which consists of a reddening of the face, shoulders, and
arms and a general burning sensation and itchiness. By gradually increasing the dose over
time, this flush reaction is decreased. Flushing can also be reduced by taking the
supplement with meals, and taking niacin non-flushing complexes. (Resource N
below) (As with any medication, nutrient, or substance that you are exposed to, the-re is
always the possibility for a serious adverse reaction. If this occurs, stop consuming the
substance, try again at a later time at a lower dose, gradually introducing it. If that
does not work and there is sensitivity at any level, then other options must be found.)
- Niacin should cost less than
about $10 a month as compared to the hundreds required for the dangerous pharmaceuticals.

- UNCIRCUMCISING
- Last months topic on
circumcision addressed the dangers and unnecessity of having the procedure performed on
infants. It is one thing not to do it, it is another to undo it.
- Undoing is what this topic is
about. I am sure you are curious about exactly how you would undo a circumcision, as I was
when I first heard it was possible. It sounded like another risky surgery to me, but I was
amazed to find that it is actually something men can do entirely by themselves with no
surgery at all. I will get into that in a moment.
- The question must first be
asked why one would even want to uncircumcise. The answer lies in the benefits of the
natural genital structures as described in last months issue. It also has to do with
the resentment and an almost militant attitude by some men about having their birth right
stolen from them. One man wrote, I have been looking for help for years and was
about to give up ... I would give anything to regain what I have lost. I cant
express how excited I am and how much I look forward to beginning the process.
Another wrote, ...at learning -that I had been circumcised. I felt so violated and
so angry at this. I didnt know how to talk about it so I kept it to myself The
book described in resource 0 (below) records the voices of dozens and dozens of angry men.
- Here are some other reasons men
wish to be made whole again.
- 1. Aesthetics. A growing
awareness of the benefits of things whole and natural has made many men feel their
appearance has been adversely altered by circumcision.
- 2. Sensitivity of the glans.
Since the glans is an internal organ, its exposure through circumcision results in
a dulling of sensations.
- 3. More satisfying relations
with age. As women age there is a thinning of the vaginal wall and a decrease in the
production of lubricating fluids. A restored foreskin will result in the production of-a
mucus secretion by the prepuce which assists in lubrication. Additionally, by serving as a
mobile sheath, the foreskin reduces friction against the vaginal walls.
- 4. Regained power and anger
management. For those who feel they have had their birth right stolen, the ability to take
control and restore it is therapeutic. We have talked at length about this in the Empowerment
tape. Holding resentment without knowing a way to solve the problem is the most dangerous
form of stress from a health standpoint. Uncircumcision gives angry men control.
- Without understanding the
reasons not to circumcise, it is very difficult to understand why a person would want to
uncircumcise. Dr. Dean Edell, the radio and television physician wrote, When women
want to enlarge a perfectly normal sized organ, the breast, they have gotten support and
even encouragement. But when men want to restore a perfectly normal and useful part of
their bodies; that was removed from them against their will, (some suggest) they have to
undergo psychiatric exams ... I just dont get it. One man from California
wrote, ...I have been trying to... look normal for 15 years. I am afraid
that if I confronted any old M.D. with the problem, hed lock me up.
- There are two basic methods by
which uncircumcision can be accomplished. The first is quick, expensive and with risk. It
is surgery. One procedure involves incizing the skin completely around the shaft of the
penis and pulling the dissected skin out over the glans. Then, skin from the scrotum is
moved up to cover the shaft. There are of course various techniques, and surgical skills
of physicians vary. Be wary. Detailed techniques and where to have the procedure done are
described in resource 0 below.
- An alternate method is through
a series of gentle stretching and taping techniques. By these private at-home procedures,
the skin can be restored over the glans completely in about three years. Until that time
the skin is basically held over the glans to create gentle traction and allow the skin to
slowly generate new tissue. Men even into their seventies have successfully restored
their foreskin.
- The book in resource O (below)
describes in complete detail several different ingenious methods men have used to
successfully restore the foreskin. Anyone serious about examining this as a possibility
needs to obtain this book.
- None of what is said here or in
the previous issue of the Review should make men feel guilty or in some way insufficient
because they are circumcised. If happy with circumcision, there is no reason to make a
change. If unhappy with it, however, it apparently is possible to take control and make a
change. Even if there are no physical problems as a result of circumcision, healing a
resentful mind can be critical to health.
