"The Thinking Person's Pet Food"™ – Since 1979

Please read this preface to the answers we have prepared for you. Thank you for your inquiry. We assume that you have come to us seeking our expertise, experience, and perspective. We will tell you what we believe you need to know to achieve health, since health is, and always has been our objective.

Please keep in mind that we have been producing nutritional products under Dr. Wysong's direction for over 35 years. We personally use these products and they have been consumed by hundreds of thousands of humans, and animals through a number of generations with remarkable results. Some pets, for example are now into their late twenties on Wysong products—an almost unheard of health accomplishment.

Also understand that no manufactured product is as good as the healing forces within nature. Thus, such products are always a compromise. But Wysong tries to compromise the least. If you want to reach more toward perfection, do as Dr. Wysong (see: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-nutrition-publications.php)has always advocated, home prepare your own using the information Wysong provides. See Optimal Health Program™: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/wysong-optimal-health-program.php.

If you take issue with our products and ask that we ignore our actual 35 years of experience in nutritional science, processing technology, and actual feeding (See Testimonials: http://www.wysong.net/testimonials.php), please provide the scientific information (not mere anecdote or experiment using unrealistic doses and/or laboratory animals) proving that Wysong products, or ingredients in our products at the levels included in our products, produce harm in any way.

Dogs and Cats do not have the same nutritional needs. Cats are carnivores and Dogs are omnivores.

Cats are obligate carnivores, dogs are less obligate carnivores (not omnivores). Please see this link regarding pet foods for both Canine and Feline: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/pet-foods-for-both-canine-and-feline.php. Tens of thousands of dogs and cats have been fed our canine/feline diets over the past 35 years with dramatic health results. (See testimonials)

DL-Methionine to help keep the cat's urine acidic is missing for most of your formulas

Please see this link and refer to the sesame seeds article: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/ingredients.php

Do an internet search on: dangers of synthetic DL-methionine.

and the taurine is too low for cats.

That is incorrect as proven by the 35 years of empirical proof noted in the above preface. No taurine deficiency has ever occurred in any Wysong diet, including before the addition of taurine to pet foods decades ago. Taurine content for Uretic™ can be viewed here (on the label): http://www.wysong.net/products/uretic-healthy-natural-cat-food.php. Special Wysong processing also preserves taurine.

I also noticed that at least one of your supplements contained Menadione Sodium Bisulfite, where kelp is the healthy thing to use for real vitamin K.

Please see this link regarding menadione/vitamin K: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/vitamin-k.php.

I can see how starches are much worse for cats, since they are not genetically made to process starches and such a diet would make them prone to diabetes.

Epigen™ and Diabetes: http://www.wysongepigen.net/solutions.php?d=9

I have been looking for a starch-free diet for my cat that contains DL-Methionine, and is free of Menadione Sodium Bisulfite. I don't feel comfortable feeding my cat a diet that is appropriate for dogs, and vice versa.

In addition to Epigen™, other no carbohydrate Wysong choices include the Archetype™, Archetype Burgers™, Au Jus™ canned, Dream Treats™, and the UnCanny™. Our new diets no longer contain menadione, just natural vitamin K.

Also see first link above.

I can see how it would be economical for a supplier to just make one food for both, kind of like the bra manufacturers making so-called "e-z size" bras that only have ONE size instead of two measurements, but they fit no one well - there is a reason a bra has TWO measurements (band and cup) - it is certainly cheaper to make 5 sizes instead of 40 combination sizes, but they fit almost no one properly, or comfortably.

Dogs and cats are different species with different diets and nutritional requirements. They are not only not the same Species (C. lupus vs F. catus), they are not even the same Genus (Canis vs Felis). In fact, they are not even the same Family (Canidae vs Felidae). While it's true they both eat flesh - the meats they eat are different, and the dog can digest things that the cat cannot, and few dogs are fond of fish.

They are just different with different nutritional needs and one or the other of them will be getting something they shouldn't or missing something they need, if they are eating identical diets.

Addressed above

Cats go for the organs first, then the muscle and bone - they don't go for the leftover parts (that we didn't eat) ground up into a "meal."

Cats might get lucky and eat salmon, but they certainly could never catch a tuna! or a deer, or a cow! Why do we feed them the left-over waste products from animals that WE eat??

Cat food should have what THEY eat: mouse, rat, rabbit, insects (grasshopper, beetle, termites, grubs, etc. - all good protein), minnows, crayfish - things they would REALLY catch and eat, not our waste from animals that WE eat. Perhaps their own REAL diet would provide everything they need.

Your article reads "Companies who attempt to demonize grains (corn, wheat, etc.) and soy omit the fact that the meats they use come from animals fed primarily corn and soy. Even organic chickens are fed this diet. Since an animal cannot be something better than the food it eats, it is misleading to claim the demerits of soy, corn, etc. and then use meat products raised on them."

With all due respect carnivores eat different things because they have different physiology. What you have hear is like saying cows eat grass and hay and since they are no better than what they eat its ok to feed your dog grass? Since we all know dogs dong eat grass for food we should not use beef raised on grass. Please use good science and logic not the same advertising "rationalizations" as the vet food companies. Different digestive systems will process different carbohydrates differently you know that yet you say something so biologically incorrect????

I am so disappointed.. I use some of your holistic products and now I wonder if that's just as much bad info?

Understood. However, we were pointing out a principle to those who demonize grains and yet use the animals raised on them. We were not suggesting that grains are the appropriate food for carnivores. Quite to the contrary, please see the following links:
